For those with these over-active sebaceous glands, a problem occurs when the sticky, oily sebum builds up within the walls of the hair shaft, and attracts dead skin cells at the epidermis to collect and block the pore opening. The oily sebum then gathers within the hair shaft and follicle and with no path of escape, builds and builds. This environment is warm, most and low in oxygen and is therefore the optimum breeding ground for the bacteria contained within the sebum. Within a short space of time, this, building bacteria, will form a pustule or spot. Some can be more deep rooted than others, in which case cysts can occur.

Many traditional Acne treatments use various acids (salicylic, glycolic, tetracylic, AHA’s, BHA’s) to strip the oil from the skin. Whilst this can have a positive effect short term on the problem, drying up the sebum, it is only treating the symptoms not the cause. Products and treatments that strip and take away from the skin can also alter the DNA of the skin, dry it out too much and cause potential problems later on.
Many topical treatments and salon procedures use Tea-Tree oil to treat acne. We at Karin Herzog have always maintained that tea –Tree is far too strong for the skin, and now our fears and concerns have been supported by the European Scientific Committee on consumer products, who dictate what ingredients are safe, and what are not. Their research and findings into the safety of Tea-Tree oil, has caused them to warn the cosmetics industry that the use of this oil in cosmetics is to be banned from December 2005, unless the industry can substantiate reasons to continue including it in their formulas. The use of Tea-Tree is common place due to its anti-septic properties, however, as we have always thought, it is simply too strong and potentially harmful for the skin, causing severe dryness and even burning and scaring.
Roaccutane is used by Doctors to treat severe acne. This is a high dose of pure Vitamin A, which effectively dries up the sebum production so that the spots can not form. Though results are good on severe acne I would not recommend this treatment since long term it can have damaging effects on the skin and on the mental health of the patient. In fact a health warning has been assigned to the drug, and Doctors are advised to prescribe it with caution, as it is believed to have a higher than average rate of depression and even suicide. In terms of the effect on the skin, clients report looking like burns victims, as the skin looks very taught and dry and extremely red in some cases. The thinning of the skin in this way will alter the DNA of the skin and can have long term problems for later on in life by accelerating premature ageing and light sensitivity.
Vitamin A, can also stock-pile in the body causing potential risks to major organs. If the clients Oxygen pressure is Low and therefore the energy and activity in the skin depleted, there is more chance of the vitamin storing and building in the body. By increasing the oxygen and therefore the energy, this stock-piling effect is diminished as the vitamin A in Herzog’s formulas is fully utilised.
